Minimally Invasive Surgery Q & A

What is minimally invasive surgery?

Minimally invasive surgery uses special surgical devices, and as a result, the procedure offers several advantages over conventional "open" surgery, including fewer and smaller incisions.

As a center of excellence in minimally invasive gynecology, OBGYN CARE performs a number of procedures using minimally invasive surgery, including:

  • Hysterectomy
  • Endometriosis diagnosis and removal
  • Uterine fibroid removal
  • Ovarian tumor removal
  • Tubal ligation

Procedures used to treat pelvic organ prolapse and incontinence can also be done with laparoscopic surgery.

Does minimally invasive surgery offer advantages?

Compared to traditional open surgery, minimally invasive techniques, including laparoscopic and robot-assisted laparoscopic surgery, may provide a number of benefits, such as:

  • Less pain after surgery
  • Fewer incisions
  • Small scars
  • More rapid recovery

You also may have a lower infection risk compared to open surgery.

How is minimally invasive surgery performed?

Today’s minimally invasive surgeries are either laparoscopic or robot-assisted laparoscopic surgeries. The team at OBGYN CARE is highly skilled in both forms. During your consultation with your doctor, they suggest an appropriate method based on your health, age, and other factors.

What is laparoscopy?

Laparoscopy uses a laparoscope, a narrow camera-equipped device. Your OBGYN CARE doctor makes tiny incisions in your abdomen and inserts the laparoscope and other instruments into the incisions.

The device gives your doctor a clear view of your internal organs and structures. They then insert small surgical instruments to perform your minimally invasive procedure.

What is da Vinci surgery?

The da Vinci surgical platform is an FDA-approved robotic technology that allows your surgeon to operate using robotic arms that mimic the movements of their hands. The doctors at OBGYN CARE may recommend da Vinci surgery as a minimally invasive alternative to performing a hysterectomy or other procedure.
